Voestalpine 2009

Voestalpine »Steel World«

voestalpine AG is an Austrian, globally operative steel-based technology and industrial goods group with headquarters in Linz. The brief was to create an experience-oriented large exhibition space for the new visitor and exhibition centre.

Inspired by the molecular structure of steel, the idea was born to open up the crucible of the new visitor and exhibition center of voestalpine AG and to treat it as a large space. In analogy to the crystalline structure of metals, it was equipped with a grid of spheres symbolizing the smallest indivisible building blocks of the material.

Some of the spheres are accessible and equipped with multimedia or exhibits, making them essential mediators of information and experience. This walk-through installation playfully creates an awareness in the visitor that they are literally "immersed" in the material that is central to the exhibition.

The surfaces of the spheres are mirrored so that the spheres multiply within themselves, visualizing the multiple possibilities of the material. Through this surface materialization, the visitor becomes part of the exhibition.A light and media installation transforms the entire interior of the crucible into a constantly moving stage for the material steel.
