UFFRUR! Utopia and resistance in the Peasants' War
At the end of the Middle Ages, people all over the southwest of Germany rose up for more freedom and justice. 500 years later, we meet them - in an exhibition that brings the past into our present. With original objects from the time of the Peasants' War, innovative AI characters and spatial storytelling, “UFFRUR!” becomes an emotional echo of a historical awakening.
For the major national exhibition “UFFRUR! Utopia and Resistance in the Peasants' War 1524/25”, jangled nerves designed a scenography that not only immerses visitors in the world of the 16th century - but also brings them closer to the thoughts, feelings and the struggle for justice of the time in a vivid way.
In the former Schussenried Monastery - itself one of the sites of the historical events - the exhibition unfolds over 900 square meters as a dynamically constructed narrative between tension and reflection: immersive rooms, 500-year-old original exhibits and interactive stations create a multi-layered exhibition experience. One of the highlights is the “Weißenau Chronicle”, a unique picture book that impressively illustrates the history of Weißenau Abbey.
A central element of the concept is also eight AI-generated characters of the time, which were developed on the basis of real sources and fictionalized. These figures step out of their time, speak directly to visitors and make complex topics such as oppression, hope and justice emotionally tangible. They are deliberately not realistically recreated, but artistically alienated - in order to question historical reconstructability and stimulate interpretation.
“UFFRUR!” shows: The Peasants' War is history - but its subject matter and in particular the questions it raises remain topical.
